 Clarifying your values

As we head into month 38 (or at least, that’s what it feels like!) of the global pandemic, it’s common to find ourselves reflecting on our lives and our careers. While many of us are now working from home, the increasingly blurred lines can often make us feel like we are living at work. And studies show that we really are working longer hours than before. This “new normal” has led many to ask:

“Is this how I want to be spending my time?”

“What am I doing with my life?”

“I’m spending all of this time at my job, but to what end?”

If you find yourself asking similar questions, now is a great time to take stock of the values that are most important to you. This can be a lifeline amid the chaos, and help us to focus on what really matters, personally and professionally.

Values are what motivates for us in our lives and in the workplace; they are how we find meaning in our work, and they are what push us to excel. Aligning your career and your values is a key to finding fulfillment and happiness in your job. And this can be a lifelong process.  Our values often change throughout our lives, as our circumstances change. For me, achievement was a huge motivator in my 20s – I worked hard to earn the degrees and the accolades and the promotions. But by the time I hit my mid-30s, had started a family, and found myself drawn to interests outside of work, I appreciated and craved balance in my job.

In a time when confusion and uncertainty reign, it’s critical to check in with yourself to consider what is driving you.

In a time when confusion and uncertainty reign, it’s critical to check in with yourself to consider what is driving you. What values are most important to you now? What do those values mean to you? Do your values align with your job? If not, is there a way to adjust your current role so that it better aligns with what is most important to you? Or might it be time to start exploring new opportunities?

I encourage you to take the following steps at least once a year:

1.      Pause. Take stock of the 5-6 values that are most important to you in your career.

2.     Think about how your current and past positions reflect those core values.

3.     If you discover that your current job does not reflect your values, consider whether there are ways to adjust your role in order to better align with your values. If not, consider whether it might be time to explore new career opportunities. (It’s helpful to reflect on your current posture: are you looking to enhance your standing/opportunities where you are, or are you looking to move? Or are you open to either?)
